Like Stonehenge, the rock statues on Easter Island, or Moai, has always been full of mystery because nobody knows why they were created or what their purpose were. Some have speculated that the 887 monolithic human figures were created as monuments to tribal leaders that passed away on the island.
But a recent discovery by archaeologists has made the island even more mysterious. After digging around the Moai, they discovered that they also had carved bodies that were buried deep underground and these statues are 3-4 times taller than what we see above ground!
The mysterious rock statues were created by the Rapa Nui people between 1250 – 1500 CE and the island is located 3,550km west of the South American mainland. Please share this important archeological discovery on Easter Island with your friends and family.
