News Anchors Try The “One Chip Challenge” On Air and It Goes Off the Rails Pretty Quickly

There are basically two types of people: people that love spicy food and people that don’t. I fall in the former category because I love food that bites back but how spicy is too spicy?

Paqui Chips are well-known for their gourmet tortilla chips; however, it’s one chip in particular that is having even the most die-hard pepper heads reaching for a tall glass of milk! Called the ‘One Chip Challenge,’ Paqui Chips challenges customers to try the spiciest tortilla chip on earth, the Carolina Reaper Madness chip. The chip is made from Carolina Reaper peppers which are certified by Guinness World Records as the hottest peppers on earth.

A Scoville heat unit is a measurement of the pungency or spiciness of a pepper. To give you some perspective, a Jalapeno pepper has a Scoville heat unit between 3,000 to 10,000. A Habanero chili pepper has a Scoville heat unit between 100,000 to 350,000. A Carolina Reaper pepper beats them by a wide margin with a record-breaking 1,569,300 Scoville heat units!

The morning crew at Channel 2 Denver decided to take the One Chip Challenge and after taking just one bite, one news anchor couldn’t handle it and even had trouble breathing!

She later posted on Facebook: “So, what really happened on TV this morning with the “one chip challenge?” I thought I was okay until I had a drink of my coffee to wash down the chip. I threw up, couldn’t breathe and felt like fire was coming out of my mouth, nose and ears. I had a bottle of water, a glass of milk, a tablespoon of honey and 3 mints and still felt on fire. An hour later I had chills and a massive headache. Three hours have gone by and I feel like I was beat up in a dark alley. Oh, and did I mention I shared the chip with my producer Scott Elliott? CRAZY! I wouldn’t recommend it.”
